International Service is a major focus of Como Rotary.
Highlights
Antimicrobial Resistance PhD. Scholar
Como is an official Funding Partner for the Australian Rotary Health and Rotary Club of Applecross PhD Scholarship.
As the world heads towards a post-antibiotic era in which common infections will once again kill, research into Anti microbial resistance (AMR) is required. If the current trend continues interventions such as organ transplantation, joint replacement, cancer chemotherapy and neo-natal care will become more difficult and even too dangerous to undertake.
The Scholarship will last for 3.5 years and the candidate will be selected locally
ShelterBox Australia
ShelterBox is an International disaster relief charity that provides temporary shelter and life saving supplies to displaced families. Each ShelterBox typically contains a tent designed to withstand extreme weather conditions, water purification kit, blankets, tools, and other necessities to help a family survive after a disaster.
The organisation is a project partner of Rotary International.
Our members make individual financial contributions to the Charity, assist at events to promote shelter box and through the International Portfolio we have purchased one shelterbox this year.
Hippo Rollers – Global Grant RC Chatsworth-Sunrise (NSW)
A water transportation device. We are currently involved as a funding partner with the Rotary Club of Chatswood Sunrise, NSW to look at combining for a Global Grant to assist with the supply of 90L rolling water tanks in Africa. These devices cost around $200 each and reduce the time spent transporting water to households thus increasing the time children can attend at school each day
H20- Water for the World
This RC Como project started in 2010 with a project in Uganda where we were able to provide water wells for villages in the Mukono District. As it was proving difficult to maintain good lines of communication with the Africans we have been able to transfer the Project to Indonesia. We are currently in the throes of starting a Water project in the Pulesari District to provide clean drinking water storage.
Containers for Timor
This project commenced in 2009 and is now administered by the Rotary Club of Wanneroo. It involves packing 40-foot sea containers with donated items of medical, vocational and educational items for free distribution to charitable groups in TL. Como members have helped for years with funding, collection, packing and general maintenance of the project site. Over 40 containers have been shipped to date.
Used Spectacle Collection
We have been involved in the collection of used spectacles, which we deliver to the Rotary Club of Mill Point who run a RAWCS Eye Care Project in Sri Lanka. This is part of the Global Hands Charity.
